KM&T partner St Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) have recently announced a major step forwards in their Lean journey with the acceptance of their redevelopment programme.
Announcing the programme, STEGH President and CEO, Paul Collins took time to thank KM&T

St. Thomas, ON – The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) has accepted the ‘re-scoped’ redevelopment proposal presented by the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) in April 2012. The project consists of new facilities for Emergency Care, Mental Health Inpatient and Outpatient Care, and a Surgical Suite.
The Hospital will immediately now move to Stage 2 of project development called Functional Programming. This stage provides details about each service, high-level diagrams, budget, and scheduling.
“This is a great outcome that demonstrates the willingness of our Hospital, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and the South West LHIN to collaborate when conditions change, to reach an outcome that is in the best interest of patient care for our community,” says STEGH Board Chair Paul Bode. “It’s a real win-win-win.”
The MOHLTC accepted the ‘re-scoped’ proposal that included the reduction in space of about 40,000 square feet (of which 15,000 sq ft is non patient care space) resulting in a lower cost project.
“Since the initial proposal was submitted to the MOHLTC in 2009, the hospital has embarked on a journey to introduce lean concepts into its patient care processes,” STEGH President and CEO Paul Collins explains. “The learning that has come from this work was instrumental in our ability to re-scope the project in the spring of 2012 to achieve greater efficiency, a smaller footprint, and lower overall costs.”

STEGH continues to work on a separate but related project to accommodate mental health inpatient and outpatient programs on an interim basis commencing June 2013. At that time, this program will be onsite at STEGH in a temporary location until the permanent facility is complete.
